CLAYTON le Moors Harriers Paul Thompson, Pete Browning and Martin Brady were the winning team in the 31 mile Manx Mountain Marathon, a tough race which climbs 8000' over most of the major peaks in the Isle of Man. Thompson was seventh in 5:34:39, Browing completed his 15th Manx in 5:40:53 for 11th while 17th placed Brady logged 5:59:04. Katy Thompson's 43rd in 7:18:48 gave her the lady veteran title as Mel Wilkinson-Walsh was 44th and Steve Whittaker was 19th. Blackburn Road Runners Lisa Richardson and John Liddle finished in 7:33:15.

Relay stars

BLACKBURN Harriers Matt Wood, Adam Smith, Danny McLean and Daniel McArneavey combined to place 28th of 56 teams in the under 15's race at the National Young Athletes Relays at Sutton Coldfield. Meanwhile, senior teams from two of our clubs contested the Northern Road Relays at Stockport. In the Men's 12 Stage Race Rossendale were 35th in 5:15:18 a place ahead of Chorley Harriers who logged 5:17:08, after both teams had been given flying starts from Thornton Taylor and Mark Schooling. Chorley's women were 21st in their 6 Stage race with Janet Chaplin running their fastest leg.

All-round talent

HYNDBURN AC enjoyed success in running, jumping, throwing and hurdling at the Warrington Open Meeting. Under 15 Caroline Smithson won the 100m and 200m while Ryan Garnett took the long jump and high jump titles at under 17 level. Imogen Walters set personal bests in the under 13's shot and discus and there was a win in the under 13's 75m hurdles for Damien Rawcliffe. Burnley's Danielle Walker set a PB 2:27 in the under 15's 800m, but finished only fourth.

Thompson trio

THREE of the Pendle AC's Thompson clan set PB's at Victoria Park, Warrington. Under 11's Emma and Rebecca set times of 2:02.2 and 2:13.9 in the 600m, while under 13 Jack logged 2:49.4 for 800m. Eleanor Markendale won three under 13 titles in the 100m, 200m and long jump. Louise Dickinson of Park High School AC set a 200m PB of 25.6 secs in the Under 17s. Tiffany Boswell beat her PB by five seconds in the under 13's 800m, and under 15 Carla Burns lowered her best over 800m by four seconds.

Payn's joy

JOHN Payn, Chorley AC's veteran walker, was third overall and second on handicap in the Lancashire Walking Club's Lambert Cup. John completed the 20K course in 2:16:24. Anyone who is interested in race walking can contact John, who is a qualified UK Athletics Coach, on 01257-278404.
