TWO wastewater workers who help maintain rivers and sewers across East Lancashire have gained masters degrees in the field.
Joanne Startin, 34, of Preston, and Clair Pearson, 26, of Poulton-le-Fylde, who are both based at Blackburn wastewater treatment works and look after water treatment at areas including Burnley, Colne, Blackburn, Chorley, Preston, Lytham and Blackpool, have both received Master of Science degrees in water, energy and the environment.
Joanne, compliance manger for North Lancashire, has to monitor waste water discharges at 45 treatment works and wrote her degree dissertation on the removal of ammonia from wastewater.
Clair, a trade effluent controller, who leads a team monitoring discharges from industrial sites, did hers on digestion of sewage sludge.
The women, employed by United Utilities, have won diplomas from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.
