A PREGNANT mother who faces a jail term for her part in a gang attack on a man broke down in tears in a dock.

Samantha Kay, 21, whose baby is due in about five weeks time, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent after a four day trial, at Burnley Crown Court.

Kay, mother of a young son, was allowed bail until after the birth.

Judge Raymond Bennett said he would have normally remanded her in custody, but that would be unduly harsh.

Sentence was adjourned until September 6 for reports and the judge told Kay, of Willow Street, Accrington, she would be going to prison.

He told her to make arrangements for the care of her little boy but added she probably would be able to take her newborn child into prison with her.

The judge told the defendant she must live at her home address or a hospital or maternity home.

After the jury's verdict, the judge welcomed the news that there would be further investigations into the case.

He had been told by Kay's barrister Ken Hind the Crown Prosecution Service was to review the involvement of others who had been mentioned in the proceedings.

Jason McConnel, 19, of Hannah Street, Accrington, had earlier been cleared of the grievous bodily harm with intent charge by the jury on the judge's direction.

Jeff Clarke, prosecuting, had told the court that the victim Brian Bramley had been to a workingmen's club and was making his way to his Accrington home.

Kay was part of a large group which set about him.
