WITTON Albion clinched the Division Two championship thanks to wonder goals from Brett Duxbury and Lee Oliver.

The in-form strikers grabbed two first half goals to claim the title against the only other side could have pipped them for top spot.

Duxbury opened the scoring after just six minutes with a stunning shot from outside the area that left Alex keeper Aidy Smethurst with no chance.

And Oliver struck late in the half with a sweetly stuck volley -- from a great deep cross from Bernard Cullen -- that Smethurst got a hand to but could not prevent from going in.

It was a half of very few clear cut chances. Shortly after Duxbury opened the scoring, Smethurst was forced to tip an Oliver header over the bar before Simon Littler fired high and wide when well placed.

For Alex, Glenn Smith was proving to be a handful and the winger volleyed over from just outside the area.

After the break, Alex reshuffled their pack, moving Martin Smith from centre back to his more familiar midfield role, and they began to cause Witton a few problems.

Glenn Smith was again in the thick of the action and he teed up Anthony Yates who fired just over after a neat drag back.

Anthony Perry then went close with a firmly struck rising drive but Witton, who have lost just once all season, should really have extended their lead when Pete Charnley somehow managed to miss an open goal after a good ball by Lee Oliver.

But Alex were playing with more urgency and Glenn Smith forced a good save out of Matt Nixon before Yates set up Smith who again was denied by the keeper.

A goal at that stage would have put Witton under pressure but the newly crowned champions held firm to clinch victory and the title.
