BLIND Bury College student Atif Umer has been selected to go on a "Journey of a Lifetime".
Atif (21) of Manchester Road, Bury, was chosen from 125 other candidates nationwide to get one of just 24 places by the Journey of a Lifetime Trust. The charity offers young people who are physically, medically, emotionally or socially disadvantaged the opportunity to travel and meet young people from all nationalities.
His trip will take him to the Far East, visiting Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos over three weeks in July and August. He will also be able to meet up with the other winning candidates.
"I feel privileged and very excited. I am looking forward to a fantastic learning experience -- I feel on top of the world," said Atif.
The full cost of the trip is around 34,000 and one of the stipulations is that each candidate should be fully involved with their own fundraising. Atif is liaising with the Student's Union at Bury College and both his family and the community are involved in working with Atif to raise the £600 needed towards the cost by May 4 2002.
If you or your organisation would like to help Atif and contribute towards his trip, contact Sue Taylor or Nazreen Ashraf at the college on 280 8269. Any money raised beyond £600 will be donated to the Journey of a Lifetime Trust to help other young, disabled people to enjoy and experience a similar journey.
