A 40-YEAR-OLD Leigh man is seriously ill in hospital after the crane he was driving overturned on a motorway.
David Boardman was travelling on the southbound carraigeway of the M6 on Tuesday night when his Volvo FL220 crane veered onto the hard shoulder and collided with a bridge support. The 24-ton vehicle was thrown into the road, where it overturned, blocking the entire carraigeway.
Mr Boardman, of St Helens Road in Leigh, was rushed to Royal Preston Hospital with serious injuries. He suffered fractures to his skull, pelvis, both legs and hands as well as internal injuries.
The M6 remained closed until the early hours of Wednesday morning.
