POLICE in Nelson are promising firm action against those involved in drug related crime as part of a tough new crackdown codenamed "Operation Fisherman".
Twenty drug warrants resulting in dozens of arrests and the recovery of a substantial amount of property and illegal substances have already been executed by police as part of the operation .
Police Sergeant Karen Edwards said: "Twenty drugs raids have already been carried out and others are currently being planned. The use and abuse of drugs and the crime that this attracts will simply not be tolerated in Nelson.
"While it's very early days for Operation Fisherman we are very encouraged by the results to date, and in particular, the support we have had from the local community.
"Not only have they responded extremely well to appeals for information but a number of people have also been in touch to tell us how pleased they are with the action that the Police are taking which is very reassuring."
That has been boosted by the news that Nelson has won a substantial amount of funding for its fight against drugs through the 'Communities against drugs' initiative.
Sgt Edwards said: "It is our intention to help members of the public and their families live in a safe and secure environment and with the public's continued co-operation, we will target those people who persist with their criminal behaviour."
Anyone with any information which may be of use to the Police can speak to Sgt Karen Edwards in confidence on 01282 472604. People can also call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
