LEIGH Miners Rangers confirmed their place in the National Conference Premier Division top three with a narrow 26-18 victory over Oulton.
They left it late to secure the victory that leapfrogs them over local rivals Leigh East and into a plum play-off place.
In truth Oulton were much the better side for the bulk of the game, taking the lead midway through the first half with a converted try from Dave Craven. When Danny Elston dived in at the corner after 25 minutes, the Miners trailed 10-0.
But they came back with a crucial score before half time when top scorer Craig Graham on his own 20-metre line and outpaced the defence for a fine solo try converted by Simon Hartley.
Oulton started the second half like a whirlwind with tries from Dan Nickle and Craven.
But with the match in its final quarter the home side clicked into gear. Lee Lomax set the ball rolling by walking under the posts and moments later Craig Wilson mesmerised the Oulton defence and Mark Sarsfield slipped over for a try. Hartley missed the easy kick as the Miners trailed 18-16.
With 10 minutes left the game was decided. Sean Phoenix crossed for the clincher that moved his side 20-18 up. In injury time sub Mick Warburton added another try.
