ISLAND is a tragic tale, brought to life through mime and masks, of life in the 21st Century that centres around a 75-year-old woman and a traffic island.

The Library Theatre have staged this production of the Trestle Theatre Company's own work, bringing a stunning mix of mask, music and physical skill.

The play follows Mildred Thomas as we are taken through her life of second world war evacuation, motherhood and finally the victim of crime.

The story is based on a true-life newspaper report about the remains of an old lady, found on a traffic island in the West Midlands.

And as we follow Mildred's life it is clear that she has experienced many problems and pitfalls, but no more than many others, yet she is somehow lost by society.

And after her home is ransacked by yobs she escapes her house and drifts between a world of fantasy and dreams, stuck on a traffic island surrounded by speeding traffic.

Trestle have devised a highly original style and they tackle social issues and complex human stories with subtle wit, imagination and surprise.

This is a thought-provoking story, that still resonates long after the final curtain, and is worth seeing if you can.
