CORRESPONDENT H. Hutchinson (March 29) asks about the trees on The Rake at Ramsbottom.
My brother and I attended Holcombe School in the 1930s and we had a tree planted in our names on the lower slopes of Holcombe church yard, below the new graves. As far as I am aware, there were no trees on that particular patch before then. Our tree was close to the road so is probably one of those now causing problems.
I think they were tagged with our names at first; certainly I can remember proudly telling people when we passed by: "That is our tree". Eventually the novelty wore off.
The occasion for the planting would have been either George V's Silver Jubilee or George VI's Coronation, probably the latter.
I am now left with a dilemma. Can I be sued for causing an obstruction, or can I claim compensation for loss of the tree? Personally, I will settle for having my half tree sawn into logs and delivered to the door for burning on my open fire!
