PARAMEDICS in Darwen have slammed vandals who trashed the town's only ambulance -- leaving the area without emergency cover for nearly two hours.
And a spokesman for the Ambulance Service, based in George Street, said it was lucky there were no serious call outsor the consequences could have been fatal.
He said: "It is absolutely diabolical. They broke into the ambulance and smashed everything inside to pieces. At this stage we can't tell if anything has been stolen.
"The crew were inside the station around 7pm when it happened, but didn't hear anything. If there had been a call out we would not have been able to attend and someone could have died. It was nearly two hours before we could get another vehicle from Blackburn to cover."
Police are investigating.
