REGARDING your report (LET, April 17), about the girl who entered a charity shop and walked out in a fresh set of clothes without paying. She was prosecuted and ordered to pay costs.
Theft is a crime. However, I wonder whether anyone has stopped to consider that this was a charity shop. The items had been given , no doubt by someone who simply wanted them to go to a good cause.
Basically, she stole unwanted, second-hand clothes. She sounds in need to me -- surely charging her £40 costs is only going to make her problems worse. She should have been sent home with a bagful of clothes instead, and some help.
