RAWTENSTALL needed a four off the last ball to secure a thrilling Transco Lancashire League victory over Church on Saturday.

Rawtenstall opener Chris Cook-Martin kept his nerve to do the honours and secure the points for his side in a dramatic finish.

Cook-Martin had seen the wickets tumble around him but finished unbeaten on 88 in a match reduced to 41 overs.

Church's Aussie professional Mark Higgs feasted on Bacup Road's short boundaries to score 100 in the visitors' 182-8. Higgs notched five sixes and 11 fours in his innings, while Rawtenstall's Peter Seal took 5-73.

Cook-Martin survived a couple of chances but held the reply together and going into the last over the home side needed eight for victory - which they managed off the final delivery.

The game between champions BACUP and NELSON at Seedhill also went to the last ball but the hosts prevented Bacup from overhauling their total.

Professional Joe Scuderi had scored 56 in Nelson's 174-4 in their 50 overs and then got among the wickets as Bacup started their reply.

Opener Peter Thompson scored 65 but it was wicket keeper John Chapman (40) who kept Bacup in the hunt.

Going into the final over, bowled by Lemon, Bacup needed eight to win. They got close - reducing their victory target to three off the last ball but Lemon bowled a dot and Nelson grabbed the victory.

A century, six wickets and three catches from professional Martin Van Jaarsveld helped ENFIELD to maximum points at BURNLEY.

The South African was in fantastic form hitting an unbeaten 107 as Enfield made 193-4 in their 45 overs with Van Jaarsveld's 50 coming off 75 balls, his ton off 110 balls. In total he hit 13 fours.

Fellow South African Pierre Joubert - not wanting to be outshone in the batting stakes - kept Burnley interested.

He was the last man out in the final over but only after hitting an impressive 104 (50 off 78 balls, 100 of 133 balls with 12 fours).

Burnley needed 21 to win going into the final over but Joubert perished going for the runs.

A green wicket at TODMORDEN didn't suit RISHTON'S spin bowlers and the home side came out on top.

In a match reduced to 44 overs, Todmorden set a target of 163, with the sub-pro Reuben Peiris, the Middleton professional, scoring 63 and later taking three wickets for 36.

Peter Sleep took four wickets for Rishton and the pro Adams chipped in with two.

Rishton's target was reduced to 146 after rain and Steven Oddy bowled superbly, with accuracy despite the wet.

He took four wickets including the important scalps of Peter Sleep and Russell Whalley, and David Whitehead helped out with the wicket of Whalley, making a spectacular diving catch.

EAST LANCS recorded a convincing win over Colne with bowler Iqbal registering a career-best six wickets for 44 runs as Colne fell well short of their target.

Phil Bolton (64) and Phil Mercer (47) high-scored for East Lancs as they set a target of 188, but an early order collapse from Colne - only Steve Woods got into double figures - cost the visitors.

YESTERDAY'S Transco Lancashire League programme was a washout and the games will now be replayed on Saturday, May 25, unless that date is needed to replay Worsley Cup first round games.
