PROPOSALS to change local postcodes are being contested by Leigh MP Andy Burnham.
MPs are calling for Royal Mail to drop proposals to change postal addresses and postcodes in Lowton, Golborne and Culcheth.
A House of Commons motion tabled by Mr Burnham says the plans to make Lowton and Golborne part of Newton-le-Willows postal district "ride roughshod over local history and geography and would cause unnecessary confusion, inconvenience and cost".
It also calls for no further changes to be made to postcodes in the Warrington area. The motion is supported by St Helens North MP Dave Watts and Warrington North MP Helen Jones.
Mr Burnham said: "These changes may make sense to someone sitting in an office with a map many miles away. But, to anyone who lives here, they are nonsensical and unnecessary.
An overwhelming majority of people oppose these plans and I have tabled a Parliamentary motion to reflect that strength of feeling. The Royal Mail must now listen to public opinion and drop them."
