A HANDFUL of new children's schemes and clubs are being set up in Preston thanks to massive cash boosts.
Four initiatives have already been allocated money and a further 13 have been approved in Preston and South Ribble this week with organisers expected to be informed soon.
The funding, given over two years, comes from The Lancashire Children's Fund which aims to provide facilities and services for children aged five to 13 to improve attendance and attainment at school, reduce crime and improve child health.
It is directed at the most deprived communities across the county including minority communities, children with disabilities, traveller families, young carers and children in rural areas who find it difficult to access services.
In partnership with a similar scheme in Accrington, a Preston pre-school group, based at Pool House Primary School, has received £120,000 for work to help children make the transition from home to school-life. Preston Drugline will receive £20,000, Preston YMCA will receive £65,000 and St Matthew's School, Preston, will get £45,000.
The grants are part of a £12m Government handout co-ordinated through a multi-agency partnership made up of the county council and its voluntary, statutory and community sector partners.
The partnership received 169 requests for cash.
County Councillor Alan Whittaker, cabinet member for education and young people, who oversees the implementation of the fund, said: "Projects like these give children a pathway from poverty and chances to use facilities and services that may not have been available to them."
