FORMER school secretary Brenda Walton treasures her late aunt Hilda Williams' 1928 Olympic bronze medal and memorabilia.
The former Hesketh Fletcher aid is so proud of her gymnastic achievements that if the proposed Hollywood-style walk of fame goes ahead in Leigh she believes Hilda, and fellow Amsterdam Olympics partner, Ada Smith, should be considered for inclusion.
Leigh duo Hilda, born in Leigh Road, and Ada, of Walmesley Road, were in the Great Britain medal winning squad in the first games in which a women's team was allowed to compete!
Members of the renowned Marsh Gymnasium at Leigh Technical College they kept in contact all their lives. Hilda, of Charles Street, Leigh, died in 1995 at the age of 84.
Neice Brenda, of Shakerley Lane, Atherton, said: "I hope if the Walk of Fame goes ahead my aunt and Ada will have a chance of everlasting fame together. After all not many people are the proud possessors of an Olympic medal."
Hilda collected her trophy, plus a matching competitor's medal, at the age of 18, when gymnastic routines were a world away from the high speed tumbling and precision work of today.
She was selected as a member of the 12-strong GB team which competed in general exercises, apparatus and jumping disciplines -- a similar schedule to the men's event.
If you wish to nominate a Leigh hero or heroine who deserves a place on a proposed Walk of Fame send details to the Journal, 44-46, Railway Road, Leigh, WN7 4AT, or e-mail bgomm@lancashire.newsquest.co.uk
