I WRITE regarding Bury Metro's threat to "name and shame" arrears tenants.

To even think of such tactics is an affront to decent people, some of whom may have run up arrears through unforeseen circumstances. It is also an affront to the moral standards of this country, bringing it down to gutter level.

So-called naming and shaming can do a great deal of damage to marriages, children, friends, relations, work-mates . . . the list goes on. When they tried it with sex offenders, there were disastrous results and it achieved nothing other than to pander to the "hang 'em and flog 'em" mentally of some people.

As a life-long socialist, I shall never vote for Labour again. There are plenty of alternatives to cut rent arrears, without stooping so low as to name and shame.
