CLARETS soccer legend and former Lancashire Evening Telegraph sports writer Jimmy McIlroy officially opened a new unit to improve the care of cancer patients at Burnley General Hospital.
Jimmy had major surgery at Burnley for cancer of the colon about three years ago and it is the second time he has been asked to open units at the hospital.
The new chemotherapy and haematology unit will offer cancer sufferers and their carers a comfortable homely environment which brings together services needed to treat people suffering from certain cancer and blood conditions.
The staff are led by Sister Eileen Dean who said: "We have worked closely for many years and have acquired the experience and expertise to deal with patients honestly and professionally while respecting their privacy and dignity at all times."
Jimmy, who lives in Burnley, was a legend at Turf Moor during his 13-years at the club and has a stand named after him.
