RESIDENTS living in 'a town with no name' have finally had their area identified, thanks to a campaign spanning years.

Visitors looking for Waterfoot often missed the busy centre because there was nothing to announced they had arrived.

But campaigners who have spent years fighting for signs to be erected have finally got their wish.

Greengrocer Steve Taylor, whose shop is in Bacup Road, said: "At last! I am delighted that we have now been officially recognised after years of asking for a road sign.

"I raised a petition to get one and got 200 signatures on it. I would like to say a big thank-you to Councillor David Hancock for all his help.

"He listened to us, promised he would help and has never given up. He has worked very hard and diligently to get us this road sign."

The town now boasts a sign on Burnley Road East near Booth Road and a further sign on Bacup Road near Ashworth Joiners. Both have been provided by Rossendale Council.

The signs say Waterfoot, Rossendale, and feature the borough's coat of arms.

On the Burnley Road sign it also says ER 1952 -- 2002 in recognition of the Queen's Golden Jubilee, which was paid for by local businessman Ryan Godwin.

Local developer Brian Boys has already agreed to provide a stone which will mark the entrance into the town from the direction of Stacksteads in The Glen.

Steve said: "I am sure this will make a big difference to everyone in the town.

"Many of the villages in the borough have their own signs but for some reason Waterfoot had been the forgotten town and only if you were local did you know where it was."
