COUNCILLOR Dave Smith (Letters, May 6) misses the point -- people in Blackburn and Darwen are more interested in improving their quality of life than looking at metal trees.
Maybe the Government would be advised to reappraise their system of grants.
I remember when this council succeeded in winning a 'City Challenge' grant from the last Conservative government.
The accumulated monies amounted to more than £200 million to improve ageing housing in Blackburn and Darwen.
This government has provided only a fraction of the amount to this town for house improvements, even after damning reports of the sub-standard properties in East Lancashire, which includes Blackburn and Darwen.
The Government should stop allocating grants for silly road schemes and metal trees (after all, an English oak looks far better) and provide funding that would really make a difference.
