LIBERAL Democrat peer Lord Tony Greaves has attacked the government's White Paper on regional government and said that there would not be enough representation on a regional assembly for places like Pendle.
Lord Greaves urged the government to look again at the electoral system which he said was being 'paraded as proportional representation but was no such thing' and to review the proposed size of the assemblies in a large and diverse region such as the North West.
He said: "Places such as Nelson and Colne deserve to have a voice just as much as big cities like Liverpool.
"Under the proposals the whole of East Lancashire would have only two representatives at most in the regional assembly.
"As they stand the proposals are a recipe for rule by a few Labour politicians in Manchester and Merseyside.
"If the government wants people in the North West to vote for this plan, they are going to have to make it much more representative of the region as a whole."
