HENNING Berg's future as a Blackburn player was today in doubt as he mulls over the offer of an extension to his contract.

The ice-cool Norwegian has a week to decide on whether or not to take out an extra one-year option on his current deal which is due to run out this summer.

And with competition for defensive places set to be fierce next season, the former Manchester United star is facing a serious dilemma about whether or not to extend his stay at Ewood by another 12 months.

England Under 21 international Martin Taylor and Swedish stopper Nissa Johansson have come on in leaps and bounds this season as manager Graeme Souness looks to the future.

And, with Andy Todd likely to complete an £800,000 move from Charlton in the next few weeks, Berg could find his first team place is in jeopardy when the Premiership season gets underway again in August.

As I understand it, Souness has spoken to the player in the last couple of days to discuss his plans for the future.

And Berg must now decide between staying at Ewood and fighting for his place or moving on elsewhere where he might have a better chance of guaranteed first team football.

Rovers have definitely won the race for Todd who was also a target for Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp but the actual deal won't be rubberstamped for another couple of weeks yet.
