VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help out with a summer play scheme set up by Barnardos to help families in the South Ribble area.
The projects supports disabled children, young people and their families, as well as providing year-round play and leisure activities through a range of after-school clubs, youth groups and school holidays.
At least 30 volunteers a day are needed for the biggest part of the project involving over 90 children and young people expected to take part in events two days a week for four weeks, and a further 30 attending each day.
The scheme will run from Monday July 2 to Friday August 23, from 9.30am to 4.30pm five days a week.
Youngsters will be divided into age groups, with each run in set locations in the Lostock Hall area.
Caroline Barnes, play, leisure and volunteer co-ordinator for the Barnardos South Ribble Families Project, based in Leyland Road, Lostock Hall, said: "We started our campaign to recruit volunteers for our summer play scheme in March this year. So far it's been a slow process, but we are hoping the scheme will get a good response once more people become aware of it. We provide a safe and fun play environment for the different groups enabling young people to socialise and get together with their school friends, meet new friends and have fun.
"Without this opportunity many of these children would have no recreational time outside the family home."
She said: "We go on trips out to local attractions and parks, go swimming, and run lots of exciting activities."
Anyone wishing to become a volunteer must be 14 and over , with their role involving supporting disabled children and young people aged four to 18.
Travel expenses and dinner allowance will be paid each day, and a volunteer training course will be run. For details, contact Caroline on 01772 629470.
