SHOPKEEPERS are being warned to be on the lookout for a gang of conmen after a spate of thefts.
The group of five men and two women have struck at shops in Blackburn, Chorley and Preston, all run by Asians.
Their modus operandi is to buy a large amount of goods, and, when the shopkeeper attends to them, one sneaks into back rooms to steal cash and valuables. Police believe they are from outside East Lancashire and could be part of a gang operating across the country.
DC Steve Atherton of Lancashire Police said: "One shopkeeper lost £8,000 in cash and jewellery. There have been at least two incidents in Blackburn recently.
"They also pay for the goods they have brought from the shop. It is all part of the crime and a way of getting the shopkeepers' attention.
"Part of the problem is that a lot of Asian shopkeepers live on the same premises as their business, and might not bank as regularly as others, so have cash lying around and often have a lot of jewellery in the house.
"We would urge shop owners to get in touch with us if they are at all suspicious or have any information."
The thieves are of east European appearance and the men are smartly dressed. Anyone with any information is asked to call Preston Police on 01772 209265.
