PHILIP Burke claimed that a combination of drink and medication left him with little recollection of his failed attempt to steal.
Bury Magistrates were told that Burke and another man entered the Tesco store in Prestwich.
Some items were placed on the checkout conveyor belt but other groceries, valued at £9, were left in the trolley.
Burke, aged 38, of Medlock Way, Whitefield, pleaded guilty to theft.
He had been drinking heavily even though he was on medication and should not drink. Burke was given a 12-months conditional discharge and ordered to pay £69 court costs.
