FURNISHING giant Dunelm has announced plans to open a new superstore in Blackburn as it bids to become a household name in the North West.
The Leicestershire-based firm will move into the old Uno store in the Peel Centre in Whitebirk Avenue later this year, creating 100 jobs in the process.
The Uno store has been empty since early 2000 when the firm, which made and sold sofas and beds, went into receivership.
Dunelm is the largest independent specialist fabric and textile retailer in the country, and the Blackburn opening will be one of eight planned for this year.
It has already taken over the 34,000 sq ft building and development director James Rowell said the company would be investing a 'substantial sum' in the refurbishment of the premises.
He said: "Blackburn is an area we identified as ideal for the company as there are no other stores there like Dunelm.
"However, we are well-established in Preston (at the Capitol Centre, Walton-le-Dale) and Rochdale so many Blackburn people may be familiar with us."
He added: "I am confident the new store will be very well received when it opens in the autumn.
"Our new stores make a significant impact on local areas bringing large numbers of very welcome jobs, increasing footfall and in turn boosting local economies."
Dunlem is due to launch a major recruitment drive for candidates to fill full and part-time positions.
Initially, managers will be recruited. Mr Rowell added that the firm was looking for people with friendly personalities, a firm belief in team effort and a high level of customer service.
Dunelm currently employs 2,000 people across the country and is a household name in the Midlands.
The firm was launched 21 years ago as a fabric stall on Leicester Market. The owners, Bill and Jean Adderley have 50 stores nationwide.
The stall initially only sold seconds, but now that only accounts for a small part of their business.
The manufacturing premises is in Leicestershire.
