VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help with a summer play scheme set up by Barnardo's for families in the South Ribble area.
The project supports disabled children, young people and their families, as well as providing year-round activities through a range of after-school clubs, youth groups and school holidays.
At least 30 volunteers a day are needed for the biggest part of the project, the summer play scheme, with more than 90 children and young people expected to take part in the event, which runs from Monday July 2 to Friday August 23, from 9.30am to 4.30pm five days a week.
Caroline Barnes, play, leisure and volunteer co-ordinator for the Barnardo's South Ribble Families Project, based in Leyland Road, Lostock Hall, said: "For most of these children and young people the opportunity to simply go out and play with their mates doesn't happen and without the opportunity to come to a scheme like this, many of these children would have no recreational time outside the family home.
"We go on trips out to local attractions and parks, go swimming, and run lots of exciting activities, bringing in outside entertainment and play equipment.
"There are also lots of art and craft sessions and sports games, so as you can see we have a ball."
Volunteers must be 14 and over, with their role involving supporting disabled children and young people aged four to 18.
Travel expenses and dinner allowance will be paid each day, and a volunteer training course will be run before the play scheme starts, covering basic disability awareness, child protection, health and safety, basic first aid and communication skills.
All volunteers will receive a certificate of attendance as well as any references required for work.
Those aged between 16 and 24 can also register with the Millennium Volunteers scheme. For details about becoming a volunteer, contact Caroline on 01772 629470.
