THE Golden Age of Rock and Roll returned to the Mechanics last night during a barnstorming two-and-a-half hours which threatened to lift the roof off.
Ian Hunter was joined on stage for the first time in nearly 30 years by Mick Ralphs his guitarist from Mott the Hoople and they seemed determined to make up for lost time.
Hunter, still all curls, shades and distinctive voice and his Rant band appeared to enjoy the show just as much as the audience.
As well as songs from his current Rant album there was a trawl through the extensive back catalogue including many Mott the Hoople favourites.
Once Bitten Twice Shy, All The Way From Memphis and All the Young Dudes sounded fresher than ever.
The temperature inside the Mechanics rose with the volume and by the end the sweat was dripping of the ceiing. Old rockers never die, it seems they just get louder.
"I am a rock star," sang Hunter at one point.
Last night Ian, you definitely were.
