BANANAS are being given out as well as exam papers in one Blackburn primary school in a bid to boost results.
Hundreds of bananas are filling the classrooms at St Thomas CE Primary School in Newton Street this week in preparation for annual compulsory testing.
Asda in Blackburn donated the stock for every child sitting English, maths and science statutory assessment tests in Year 2 and Year 6 as part of a study in accelerated learning.
Headteacher Carolyn Lord said: "Our school is in a socially-deprived area and a lot of children come to school without having eaten and they get very lethargic by lunchtime.
"Research shows that performance in tests can be improved by eating. I think it will make a difference but we will compare the results with last year."
Six of the 20 teachers at the school have been trained in accelerated learning techniques.
