AN East Lancashire brass band has hit the high note in scooping awards in a North West competition.

Blackburn with Darwen Brass Band, which has members from all over the county, saw off 25 other bands to win the first place prize of £600 and a trophy in the first section, and the second place prize of £600 in the championship section in the Whitehaven contest.

The second band also came second in the fourth section.

Member Rebecca Landen, 16, also scooped a prize for her performance on the tenor horn.

The band, which is divided into three tiers -- senior, second and juniors -- will also be celebrating on Saturday May 25 when the new Blackburn with Darwen Mayor Coun Tony Humphrys will open its new practice rooms at Goose Hill Power Station, Goose Hill Lane, Darwen, at 4pm.

Senior band member Dee Russell said: "We had to leave our old practice rooms for one reason and another, but we were kindly given what is really a glorified shed at the Goose Hill Power Station.

"We have spent months doing it up by painting it and laying carpets, and it is finally ready."
