MR D Fielding (Letters, May 11) and a previous correspondent from Skelmersdale representing 'RoadPeace' were both extremely vehement in their condemnation of Eric Leaver for his comments on the new plethora of speed cameras in Lancashire (LET, April 24).
Everyone is very quick to point out that these extra cameras will 'save' more than 700 people from being involved in car/motor vehicle accidents.
Unless you have a crystal ball and can see into the future, how would you know that any fall in the number of accidents was not down, quite simply, to thousands more cars being fitted with ABS braking systems?
It is not very often that I agree with what Eric Leaver says in his Wednesday column. However, in this case I am in full agreement with him.
Speed cameras are, as he said, mainly a means for the police to take in virtually limitless finances from the ever-persecuted motorist.
Perhaps Mr Fielding would let us see the mathematical/scientific calculation on which his 'facts for the future' are based. By that, I do not mean statistics.
H ROBINSON (Mr), Juniper Court, Woodside Road, Accrington.
