SHOPKEEPERS are being warned to watch out for a gang after a spate of thefts.

A number of shopkeepers, all of whom have been Asian, have been targeted by a gang of conmen and women recently at stores in Chorley, Blackburn and Preston.

Police said five men and two women -- who may be part of a gang operating across the country -- enter stores and pretend to buy a large amount of goods.

When the shopkeeper attends to his supposed customers one of the gang sneaks in and steals from the back rooms, often cash or jewellery.

Police believe the gang is from outside the region and are warning shopkeepers to be on their guard.

Detective Constable Steve Atherton said: "One shopkeeper was robbed of £8,000 in cash and jewellery.

"They also pay for the goods they have brought from the shop. It's all part of the deceit and a way of getting the shopkeeper's attention.

"Part of the problem is that a lot of Asian shopkeepers live on the same premises as their business, so have cash lying around and jewellery in the house.

"We urge shop owners to be on the lookout for this gang and to get in touch with us if they are at all suspicious or have any information."

The thieves are described as being of Eastern European appearance. The men are believed to be smartly dressed.
