MP DAVID Crausby is calling for tracking devices to be fitted in vehicles after his son was car-jacked last week.

He believes that being able to pinpoint the location of a stolen car would discourage thieves stealing car keys.

The Bolton North East MP found out his 35-year-old son, Jason, had been attacked by a car-jacker when he returned from a defence committee meeting in Romania.

His council worker son had been hit on the back with a hammer when the attacker tried to grab the keys to his Volkswagen Golf in a Bury car park.

Friends of the attacker then tried to run Jason over, but they fled empty-handed.

Mr Crausby tabled an early day motion two months ago that was backed by 13 MPs.

It calls for an urgent assessment of car-jacking to prevent it from becoming a worse problem.

Talking to the Bolton Evening News about the incident for the first time, the MP said: "I was shocked really. Jason didn't tell me it had happened to him because he knew I would have been frustrated so the first I heard was when I saw it in the newspaper on my return home.

"Fortunately he's okay but he is annoyed. You don't think these things would happen to you."

He has called on Parliament to seek a solution to the problem.

Mr Crausby would like to see a drop in the cost of tracking devices, which cost motorists between £100 and £200 each year.
