FOR most people the prospect of entering a huge stadium filled with cheering crowds would be extremely daunting.

But 21-month-old Matthew Topping has done just that by competing in the national Dwarf Games in Birmingham, making him the youngest contestant at the event.

And he took it all in his stride!

Toddler Matthew was born with a growth-stunting condition known as achondroplasia.

But his parents David and Ruth, of Stubbins Lane, Ramsbottom, only received the diagnosis when he was six months old.

"It was Christmas-time when we were told," said David, "and you could say that it came as a massive shock to us."

The family became members of the Dwarf Association who put them in touch with the Smith family of Prestwich, whose daughter Ruth suffers from the same condition.

Ruth has become a bit of a local celebrity as a regular competitor in the games and she was named as the Millennium Child of Achievement by C&A in 2000.

David, who also has two daughters aged ten and five, said: "The association and Mr and Mrs Smith have helped us come to terms with things and we now help to raise people's awareness of achondroplasia.

"The games had representatives from all over Europe and it is the only time one of these children can shine. It is a real confidence booster for them.

"The look on their faces when they get a medal is the best thing."

Matthew took part in his first-ever event, the under-five's ten metre dash, and although he finished in sixth place he was awarded a certificate for his efforts.

"It was on a full size athletic track at the Alexander Stadium and although Matthew did not go very fast, he managed to keep in his lane. He loved it!" added David.

Schoolgirl Ruth Smith (11), of Shirehills in Prestwich, did "exceptional" at the games.

She gained gold medals in hockey, basketball and football, four silvers in athletics and two bronze medals.

Her mother, Lynn, said: "I have never seen her play team sports as well as she did.

"Ruth also entered the table tennis for the first time, and although she did not win anything she enjoyed it.

"Matthew was amazing, you should have seen him go!"
