SCIENTISTS are trying to find out why the house sparrow is declining.
There seems to have been a recovery recently and a few years ago the Lancashire Evening Telegraph reported a young all white house sparrow being fed by its parents, pictured, above.
Last week I saw both a white crow and a white house sparrow in East Lancashire.
These rarities have no body pigment and are known as albinos. Such individuals do not occur very often and it is due to a rare genetic combination.
Some think that there are more albinos these days because of increasing levels of pollution.
Scientists do not accept this and the likely explanation is that more of us are interested in wildlife.
The more of us there are who are interested in the natural world the more likely we are to spot an albino.
