AN inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of a pensioner who had worked with asbestos.

The hearing, at Burnley Magistrates Court, was told Brian Eastwood, 68, died at Pendleside Hospice on May 16.

Mr Eastwood, of Leamington Avenue, Burnley, had been a joiner all his life and had often worked with asbestos. A claim was being made on his behalf for disability.

Mr Eastwood had been diagnosed as suffering from cancer, his condition deteriorated at Burnley General Hospital and he was transferred to the hospice on the day he died.

Coroner's officer Bob Wilson told the opening a post mortem examination had been carried out and the results of histology tests were awaited.

Mr Eastwood had been identified by his wife. Acting East Lancs Coroner Richard Taylor adjourned the hearing until a convenient date.
