A MAN was humiliated when searched in a full pub and then "marched," through Burnley handcuffed, a court was told.

Burnley Magistrates heard Alan Heaton, 29, had been abusive towards the police officer and ended up arrested.

Heaton, of Cornell Grove, Burnley, admitted breaching the peace and was bound over in the sum of £50 for six months.

Tom Snape, prosecuting, said a police officer on duty in Burnley saw the defendant wearing a large heavy coat although it was a hot day.

Heaton was seen to duck into a pub.

The officer was suspicious and went into the pub, telling the defendant he wanted to search him.

No stolen property was found on the defendant and he became abusive towards the officer.

Richard Taylor, defending, said Heaton had been humiliated to be searched in front of everybody in the pub.

When they got outside, he advised the police officer he had been wrong as nothing had been found on him.

He was told to modify his language.

Mr Taylor said Heaton was then marched on foot though the streets of Burnley in handcuffs.

The officer had stated he had handcuffed the defendant for his "comfort and safety."

The solicitor went on :"The defendant was stopped for what the police officer thought was a good reason. He clearly didn't."
