BLACKBURN Harriers cater for the full range of athletic events, a fact that was emphasised this week with success for the seniors on the road, and juniors on the track.
The first of the Horwich Jubilee Races of the summer took place last Wednesday and the race was marked by a return to form of Harrier Life Member George Woodburn.
His running has been blighted for the last 18 months by a knee injury, but at Rivington he found the strength to hold off a challenge from Horwich triathlete Tony Hesketh to take the over 50s title. George logged 22:29 for the four miles.
Ben Fish of Blackburn Harriers has won the series for the past two years, and he opened his defence in determined mood. Leading from the start, he managed to overtake the lead motor cycle at one stage, and crossed the line in 19:30.
Ben may be unable to complete a hat-trick of titles this year though as he may have to leave for University in Alabama before the last race.
Chorley AC's John Swift won the over 60 prize in 25:33, while Clayton Harrier Paul Brannon in 14th was third M40. The remaining races on June 19, July 17 and August 28.
The weekend brought a double for the juniors of Blackburn Harriers with the girls and boys both victorious in the Young Athletes Leaguewrites Tony Wood.
For the boys, the senior throwers were outstanding with Anthony Kinder winning the javelin with a 40m effort and he also took the B shot and discus. Gavin Southworth won the shot and B javelin.
In the under 15s, newcomer Chris Callaghan won the hammer and B discus and Tom Coar the shot while Liam Holden took the under 13 shot.
Hurdlers Stuart Ward, Tom Coar and Jordan Nevins all won their races and in the high jump Stefan Holden, Stuart Ward and Atif Zamir were impressive.
The 1500 was strong with Danny McLean Adam Smith and Curtis Pearce all winning. Finally the under 13 200m pair of Peter Matthews and Morgan Lewis both sprinted to victory. The boys defeated Trafford on their home track by 196 to 169.
The girls now top the Division Two table after defeating Skyrac from Yorkshire and four other clubs at Burnley with 319 points.
Winners included superb doubles by Candy Hamilton in the 800 and 1500 and Caris Lake in the shot putt and discus.
In-form Christina Carr took the 75m hurdles a performance matched by Claire Bamber in the under 15s. In the under 17 captain Rachel Holt took the high jump while Emma Fletcher won the 300m. At the end of the meet the seniors won the 4 x 100 relay.
