LANCASHIRE County Council has followed Bury Council's lead and thrown out plans to turn a disused quarry in Shuttleworth in to a tip.
Members of the county council ruled that the landfill site planned for Fletcher Bank Quarry would lead to deterioration in the quality of life for local residents in terms of traffic, dust, noise, smell and pollution.
Earlier this year, Bury's planning control committee rejected the application on similar grounds, but because Fletcher Bank Quarry straddles Bury and Lancashire, both councils were entitled to vote.
Rossendale Borough Council, which could not vote on the plans, made a recommendation that the application also be rejected.
Biffa Waste Ltd sought to turn part of the quarry into a waste disposal site for commercial, industrial and household waste for the next ten years.
Protesters, who formed the pressure group Ramsbottom Against Landfill, fought for four years against the proposals.
