SHOPKEEPERS across Lancashire are being warned to be on the look out for a gang of conmen after a spate of thefts.
A number of shops in Preston, Chorley and Blackburn, all run by Asians, have been targeted by a gang of conmen and women recently.
Police said the group of five men and two women -- who may be part of a scam operating across the country -- enter stores and pretend to buy a large amount of goods.
When the shopkeeper attends to his supposed customers one of the gang then sneaks in and steals from the back rooms, often cash or jewellery.
Police believe the gang is from outside the region and are warning shopkeepers to be on their guard.
DC Steve Atherton of Lancashire Police said, "One shopkeeper was robbed of £8,000 in cash and jewellery. There have been at least two incidents in Blackburn recently.
"They also pay for the goods they have brought from the shop. It is all part of the scam and a way of getting the shopkeeper's attention. Part of the problem is that a lot of Asian shopkeepers live on the same premises as their business, may not bank as regularly as others so have cash lying around and often have a lot of jewellery in the house.
"We would urge shop owners to be on the look out for this gang and to get in touch with us if they are at all suspicious or have any information."
The thieves are described as being of Eastern European appearance. The men are believed to be smartly dressed. Anyone with any information is asked to call Preston Police on 01772 209265.
