LANCASHIRE lasses have put up a united front and given Race for Life a boost with more than 1,100 entries this year -- topping last year's figure.

Anne Sweeney, of Cheddar Drive, Preston, is the North West organiser who ran the 26-mile Flora London Marathon earlier this year, she is delighted with the enthusiasm of local teams and individuals taking part.

She said: "We have more than 1,100 participants which is fantastic. If everyone aims to raise at least £50, think of the impact that can make to Cancer Research UK."

She added: "Don't forget to get your sponsorship -- go to your boss, ask your manager or personnel team at work if they will 'match give' that is if they will match the sponsorship amount you and your colleagues raise as a donation. It's a tax efficient way for them to give to charity."

Staff Nurse, Jean Hogarth, at Royal Preston Hospital's children's ward, is entering the race with a team of nurses. She said: "We are ready -- we might not be at the front with our headbands on but it is a race for life and we will make it around the course somehow."

Cancer Research UK has been thrilled at the response Race for Life has generated and Race for Life director, Rachel Roxburgh, said: "It allows you to really make a difference. Women such as Jane Thomlinson who completed the London Marathon despite being terminally ill with cancer and last year raised £4,000 through Race for Life, along with those who have been treated successfully and women whose loved ones have been touched by cancer, join together to raise vital funds to help cure cancer faster."
