PLANS to build two linked blocks of ten apartments in Malham View Close, Barnoldswick, have been turned down by Pendle Council.

The application by West Craven Developments was referred from the West Craven Committee to development control after members decided not to approve it.

They believed the proposed development would adversely affect the setting of the Barnoldswick Conservation Area but were told this was a weak ground for refusal.

Shaun Martin, who spoke on behalf of residents opposing the development, said: "Malham View residents were originally told that semi-detached houses or bungalows were to be built.

"This development would be on the skyline seen from all areas of Barnoldswick. It is on the edge of a conservation area.

"Forty-six people have signed a petition saying it is out of character.

The plans were for two buildings providing five two-bedroomed flats each connected by a central two-storey glass lobby. They were refused on the grounds the designs were inappropriate for the location adjoining a conservation area and out of character with the rest of Malham View Close.

Members also said they believed the original layout of houses rather than apartments was more suitable to the area.
