TALENTED young brass player Angela Barnes beat four male competitors to win through to the final of BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, broadcast live on Sunday.
Angela, 19, from Haslingden, plays the French horn and listeners to Radio Three and Four heard her compete in the brass semi-final yesterday against two trombone players, a trumpet and tuba player.
She will now compete against four other musicians, the winners of the keyboard, string and woodwind semi-finals, at the young musician final, at the Barbican, London, on Sunday, broadcast live at 6pm on BBC2.
Angela will perform Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 2 with conductor of Sir Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
She is studying at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she plays in the GSMD Sinfonia, Wind Ensemble, Brass and Wind Quartet and Horn Quartet.
Both her parents play the French horn and Angela was initially taught by her mother.
She has previously studied at Chethams School of Music, Manchester.
Her father is a sound engineer for BBC Radio Manchester and her mother is a peripatetic brass teacher in Lancashire.
The finalists receive £2,000 and this year's winner will also collect a BBC Travel Award and a trophy specially designed by John Rocha at Waterford Crystal.
Highlights of the performances by each of the 25 competitors will be broadcast on BBC2 tomorrow at 6pm.
