AT the executive committee meeting held to "discuss" the proposed closure of Affetside School, Councillor Steve Perkins, councillor for lifelong learning, pontificated at some length about the delights of the mobile classroom system used to accommodate children from closed schools at other schools.
Coun Perkins was adamant that mobile classrooms were a cheaper option than building! The meeting was also informed by Coun Perkins that the facilities were such that teachers were actually rushing to secure themselves a post which guaranteed they could work in one, because they are better than a school classroom!
As Coun Perkins is so fond of such mobile accommodation, perhaps he and his cohorts could have some installed in their gardens in which they could hold council meetings. They could then close all executive suites at the town hall and make huge savings on cleaning staff, maintenance, heating, lighting, etc. These savings could, of course, be put to better use funding education.
Coun Perkins stated that he was elected to do a job for the good of the people, and he was not there to do just as he wished! Isn't it time he began to do it then?
