ALL may continue to be quiet on the transfer front at Turf Moor but Clarets boss Stan Ternent has admitted: "I might still have a calculated gamble."

That gamble could involve a move for known targets David Johnson and Marlon Beresford or a swoop for "three or four other targets" he is keeping to himself.

The Burnley boss has been outspoken in his criticism of television companies Carlton and Granada who have plunged football into chaos with their refusal to honour ITV Digital's contract.

But, given the current crisis in football, Ternent is warning all players that they will have to be sensible in their wage demands.

"I think they are going to have to have a more realistic view," he explained. "If you have only got a tenner and they want £15 they can't have it. I will not put this club in hock."

Ternent has reiterated his desire to sign both Marlon Beresford and David Johnson but he has revealed there are "three or four other targets" in his sights.

It is against Ternent's nature to reveal the names of his targets but the hope of getting last season's loan stars permanently on the pay-roll has been well known since they were at Turf Moor.

"It is no secret that I would like to sign Marlon and Johnno," he said.

"I always prefer to keep the names out of the headlines but we all know the majority of the fans as well as the board would like me to sign them.

"So they are both on my wish list but there are three or four other targets that I am very interested in.

"But it may be a situation where I will have to sell some people before I can bring others in.

"I don't want to as I am trying to build a squad but if the television money is not forthcoming, the most important thing is Burnley Football Club.

"I'm only the gaffer here for a short period of time in the life of this club. I am coming into my fifth season at the club and I am aware of the need to run a tight ship.

"When the television situation is sorted out I will know the financial framework that I have to work within."

One position where it is rumoured that Ternent would like to strengthen is at left back.

Having released the experienced Mitchell Thomas at the end of last season he still has Lee Briscoe with Graham Branch as cover but both men have been used in other positions in the past.

Darlington's Paul Heckingbottom is one name that has been suggested while another option could be Nottingham Forest's Jim Brennan.

The Canadian international came to prominence under former Burnley assistant boss John Ward when he was in charge at Bristol City and Forest paid £1million for him before they hit hard times.

Cash is even scarcer at the City Ground at the moment and, although Brennan is not out of contract this summer, he may be allowed to leave in order to reduce Forest's wage bill still further.

Beresford's release from Middlesbrough means he is still a top target for Ternent but if he should fail to land him a couple more Premiership keepers are now on the market.

West Ham boss Glen Roeder has allowed both Shaka Hislop and Craig Forrest to leave Upton Park and they will both be looking for new clubs ahead of next season.
