HAPTON'S celebrations continue on Monday at the recreation ground. Many activities are planned, including children's entertainment, bouncy castle, a band in the afternoon, and a disco in the evening.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Burnley, Councillor Gordon and Mrs Kathleen Birtwistle, accompanied by their attendant David Farrer, will attend the event during the day.
Food will be available all day. Alternative arrangements are being made in case the weather is beastly.
SOME Hapton parish councillors and residents of Valley Gardens attended the planning meeting at Burnley Town Hall last week to protest about the proposed animal waste incinerator which has been planned for the old Hapton Valley Colliery site.
The concerns expressed covered the whole of the area which would be affected by the incinerator, from Hapton itself to Rosegrove, West Burnley and Habergham Eaves.
One particular concern voiced was that bereaved attending the cremtorium would be upset by the noise and smells possibly created by the development.
The planning committee unanimously agreed to object to the proposal. As this is a proposal backed by Lancashire County Council it will now go to a meeting in Preston in July then to a final decision in September.
Parish councillors and residents will attend both of these meetings to express their continued concern.
THE Mayor and Mayoress of Padiham, Councillors Granville and Pat Lord, have named the charities they will support during their term of office. These are Burnley and Pendle Hospice, the Padiham Disabled Group and the children's wards at Burnley General Hospital.
THE Mayor is delighted with the response he has had from Padiham people wanting to serve as councillors on the new town council and also for the position of town clerk. Applications will be closed on Friday May 31. If more than five applications are received the applicants will be interviewed by a panel, including the Mayor and Burnley Council officer Ian Wolstencroft.
A quiz evening is held monthly at Padiham Methodist Church on Wednesdays at 7.15pm. One was held last night and was well attended but the regulars want to be challenged by newcomers.
The next quiz night will be on Wednesday June 26.
THE hymn books at St John's RC Church have been used so enthusiastically that they are now decrepit. This led one of St John's parishioners to suggest that each member of the congregation sponsor one. A list has gone up at the back of church and is filling rapidly.
BESSES o' the Barn and the Burnley Junior Alliance Band will be in Padiham Memorial Park on Jubilee Monday. There are many activities to be enjoyed.
HAPTON'S Golden Jubilee celebrations will kick off on Saturday June 1 at 1pm on the recreation ground when Hapton Football Club will challenge teams from Burnley Football Club and Burnley Council. It will take the form of a knockout tournament.
Hapton's team are currently fourth in the Burnley and District league and so any outsider expecting a walk over is in for a shock.
