PENSIONERS have quizzed the leader of Lancashire County Council Hazel Harding about the proposal to close 35 of its 48 old folks' homes.

Founder of the Campaign for the Restoration of Older People's Services Sue Troughton, an LCC sheltered housing scheme warden from Loveclough, organised the meeting at the Village Centre in Crawshawbooth.

Nearly 1,400 people have signed a petition which objects to the closures. Sue said: "She was asked if she thought the consultation was genuine and she said 'yes.' But she accepted it could have been done better and it may be extended to August.

"She could not say what will happen yet, but it seemed like some of the homes will have to close to get the money to do the others up to Government standard.

"She accepted that older people were happy living where they are and said they would not have to go back out into the community. They would, hopefully, be found accommodation in other LCC homes if they wanted to stay."
