CLOSE links forged between a Leigh school and college have had a dramatic effect.
Westleigh High School's innovative courses for 14-16 year olds have led to a 21 per cent increase in the number of students seeking further education in three years.
Last year 79 per cent of pupils continued their training compared to 58 per cent in 1998.
Head teacher Mr John Pout says part of the reason behind the success is the close relationship with Wigan and Leigh College, and he praises its new principal, Mr Jim Crewdson.
He said: "He is a breath of fresh air in terms of providing a clear, direct and honest vision for the improvement of post-16 education in Leigh."
Mr Crewdson was guest of honour at the school's record of achievement presentation handing certificates to senior prefects.
Mr Pout said: "I would like to congratulate Year 11 on their graduation. There are some tremendously talented students who will go on to university and some of the top jobs in the country. I wish them well."
