THE pouring rain failed to dampen the spirits of women taking part in this year's Race for Life at Preston Sports Arena on Sunday.
Lancashire lasses showed they were made of stronger stuff as they united to complete the charity five km race in aid of Cancer Research UK.
With more than 1,400 entries, the number of people taking part topped last year and the atmosphere was highly charged.
Anne Sweeney, North West organiser of the event, said: "The women were fantastic, the rain was unbelievable and everyone still took part.
"I think they have every right to ask their sponsors to double their money for making such a huge effort on what everyone will remember as being a very wet day.
"People were going for it -- attempting their personal best and others really enjoyed the social aspect walking with their umbrellas up.
"There were moments of great happiness and, of course, memories for those who have died."
The commentators kept everyone in good humour and The Citizen was singled out for praise after supporting the event since it was launched around ten weeks ago.
