A LOOK at the latest single and album releases.

SINGLES:

THE SHINING: I Wonder How (Zuma)

RICHARD Ashcroft and Nick McCabe may have been given all the praise for the creative work of the Verve, but here their former colleague Simon Tong emerges in his own right. Dark and moody, this smouldering indie number is a step back towards the big time for the guitarist and his new band.

GOLDRUSH: Same Picture, (Truck/Virgin)

AS refreshing as a cool drink on a hot day this hook laden track is instantly spellbinding. This should see Goldrush's star ascending still higher.

SEX PISTOLS: God Save The Queen, (Virgin)

FIRST time out it was relevant and only fiddling the charts kept it off the top spot. But 25 years down the line and with most of the single buying public too young to know or even care about the Pistols, there can be no excuse for this sort retro moment. With Lydon now choosing to tip his cap in the direction of her Majesty, old age seems mellowed his views. The memory of the most influential group since the Beatles is only being soiled by stunts like this.

ALBUMS:

JAMES: Getting Away With It (Sanctuary)

THE emotionally charged atmosphere of a hometown crowd packed into the Manchester Arena makes this farewell live album an absolute must if you were lucky enough to witness the night first hand. But the album's real strength is the ability to capture the interest of the less committed fan. A brilliant full stop to the story of James.
